Air cargo tonnages saw a significant six percent increase last week, mainly driven by a recovery in Asia Pacific, particularly from China and Hong Kong, which contributed to two-thirds of the growth. Japan and South Korea also recovered from recent holidays, showing increases of 60% and 21%, respectively. However, demand from Central and South America declined by four percent due to reduced flower shipments following Mother’s Day. Average worldwide rates rose slightly to $2.33 per kilo, although they remain lower than last year, with MESA origins experiencing the largest year-on-year declines in rates.
