Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have agreed to merge their networks, creating the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S. The merger is expected to be finalized by 2027, pending approval from the Surface Transportation Board. The combined network would span over 50,000 route miles across 43 states, enhancing intermodal services and reducing transit times. Union Pacific’s CEO, Jim Vena, will lead the new company if the merger is approved and has committed to stay with Union Pacific for at least five years.
