The Rhenus Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to operate barge services on various National Waterways in India. Initially, Rhenus will deploy push boats and barges with a capacity of 400 tonnes, aiming to scale to 100 barges to transport over a million tonnes of cargo annually by 2025. Rhenus will utilize its extensive European inland navigation experience to support India’s logistics transformation, enhancing the Inland Water Transport sector and facilitating cargo movement on major rivers like the Ganga and Brahmaputra.
