Heathrow Airport has proposed a £21 billion plan to construct a privately financed third runway within ten years, aiming to boost cargo capacity by 50% and create at least 30 new passenger destinations. The expansion could add 0.43% to the UK’s GDP, primarily benefiting areas outside London. The plan includes a new runway, upgraded terminals, and improved transport links, with commitments to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Supported by business groups and trade unions, Heathrow plans to consult stakeholders and submit a planning application in 2028.
