The U.S. will impose new tariffs on wood imports and related products starting Oct. 14, with a 10% tariff on softwood timber and lumber, and a 25% duty on upholstered wooden items like furniture. Beginning Jan. 1, these rates will increase to 30% for upholstered furniture and 50% for kitchen cabinets and related parts. Exceptions exist for certain trading partners, with the U.K. facing a 10% tariff and Japan and the EU a 15% levy. The decision follows a Commerce Department investigation identifying threats to national security from current import practices.
