The U.S. is set to impose a 93.5% tariff on graphite imports from China, following preliminary findings from an antidumping investigation. This rate, along with an 11.58% duty from a related countervailing duty investigation, aims to address claims that Chinese imports benefit from unfair subsidies, harming U.S. producers. With China supplying 78% of the world’s graphite, the new tariffs could impact various sectors, particularly the automotive industry, which relies on graphite for electric vehicle batteries. EV manufacturers like Tesla and Rivian have requested exemptions to avoid increased costs on essential materials. Final determinations are expected by December 5.
