Alico Inc., a major U.S. orange grower, plans to exit the citrus industry due to severe production losses from hurricanes and ongoing plant diseases. The company, which supplies Tropicana, will cease further investments in citrus after the 2025 harvest, significantly downsizing its workforce and transferring management of 3,500 acres to third parties. Alico aims to become a diversified land company, leasing or selling most of its 53,370 acres for agricultural or development purposes, acknowledging that citrus farming in Florida is no longer economically viable.
