Walgreens is set to expand its micro-fulfillment centers, aiming to service nearly 6,000 stores within a year, as stated by CEO Tim Wentworth during a recent earnings call. After previously pausing the rollout to enhance productivity at existing centers, the company currently supports over 4,500 stores with 11 operational facilities. Wentworth highlighted significant improvements in the cost and efficiency of these centers, attributing success to Jon Joplin, the chief technology and operations officer. Other retailers like Giant Eagle and Chewy are also adopting similar automated fulfillment strategies.
