Starting mid-October, U.S. ports may impose new fees on ships linked to China, targeting vessels built, owned, or operated by Chinese entities. Fees range from $18 per ton to $120 per container and will increase annually. This policy follows a year-long investigation into China’s maritime practices and aims to enhance U.S. shipbuilding by offering exemptions for ordering U.S.-built vessels. While intended to curb Chinese dominance, trade groups warn it may raise shipping costs and disrupt supply chains. The USTR is also considering further tariffs on logistics equipment and imposing restrictions on exports.
