With September underway, the likelihood of a labor strike at U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports is increasing as the current six-year contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) nears expiration on September 30, 2024. The ILA, representing 14,500 workers, suspended negotiations in June due to concerns over automation at ports. The National Retail Federation is urging both parties to resume talks to prevent disruptions during peak shipping season, emphasizing the economic risks of a strike amidst existing supply chain challenges.
