The International Maritime Organization’s Legal Committee has adopted new guidelines to ensure fair treatment for seafarers detained for alleged crimes, emphasizing their rights and protections during legal proceedings. The guidelines address issues like due process, protection from arbitrary detention, and maintaining wages and medical care. With a troubling rise in seafarer abandonment cases reported, the Committee urged member states to enhance reporting accuracy and implement existing guidelines. Additionally, the Committee is addressing substandard shipping through a regulatory review and will work on further outputs related to maritime safety and security.
