The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) seeking public comments for 60 days regarding Positive Train Control (PTC) regulations, aimed at enhancing safety by preventing train collisions and derailments. Originally mandated by the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008, railroads were required to implement PTC by December 2020. The NPRM aims to standardize regulations for instances when PTC systems are disabled, ensuring consistent reporting and enhancing operational safety and efficiency. PTC, despite being seen as an “unfunded mandate,” is expected to improve productivity in rail operations.
