For the week ending August 31, U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes showed annual increases, as reported by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Rail carloads reached 233,278, marking a 1.0% rise, with seven of ten commodity groups seeing gains, particularly in grain and petroleum. Intermodal containers and trailers also rose by 15.3%, totaling 283,354. Overall, total rail volumes increased by 8.4% to 516,632. However, for the first 34 weeks of 2024, rail carloads decreased by 3.6%, while intermodal units grew by 9.3%.
