Mercedes-Benz has launched a battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim, Germany, aimed at producing over 50,000 new battery modules annually. Funded by Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs as part of a research initiative, this facility will utilize a mechanical-hydrometallurgical process to recover up to 96% of essential raw materials like nickel, lithium, and cobalt. The plant, which represents a significant investment and commitment to sustainability, will help the automaker comply with new EU regulations on battery recycling, enhancing the sustainability of its electric vehicle production.
