For the week ending October 19, U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes showed mixed results, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Rail carloads totaled 223,278, a 4.6% decrease from the previous year, while intermodal containers and trailers rose by 6.0% to 287,452 units. Seven of the ten carload commodity groups reported annual increases, notably in grain and miscellaneous carloads, while coal and nonmetallic minerals faced declines. Year-to-date figures indicate a 3.3% drop in rail carloads but a 9.0% increase in intermodal units.
