IANA reports that intermodal volumes increased in September.

Intermodal volumes showed strong growth in September, with a total of 1,514,487 units, marking a 7.4% annual increase. While domestic containers rose by 2.9%, trailers declined by 9.2%, leading to an overall 2.0% increase in domestic equipment. Year-to-date, intermodal volume is up 8.8%. Despite challenges like high interest rates and sluggish retail sales, imports drove growth, particularly for international containers. Looking ahead, a 13.8% increase in international containers is anticipated for 2024, although domestic container growth is expected to be modest at 3.5%.
