The International Maritime Organization's Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response has finalized an updated draft strategy and action plan for 2026 to address marine plastic litter from ships, including fishing vessels. This plan aims to reduce shipping's contribution to ocean plastic pollution, enhance port reception facilities, and strengthen international regulations. Additionally, it promotes seafarer training and the implementation of fishing gear marking systems to combat discarded fishing gear. The Sub-Committee will submit these initiatives for approval at the upcoming Marine Environment Protection Committee session.
