UPS has retired its MD-11 fleet following a fatal crash and subsequent grounding, which constituted about 9% of its air capacity. The company plans to replace this aircraft with Boeing 767s over the next year, incurring a $137 million non-cash charge for the write-off. To manage capacity during the peak season, UPS adjusted operations by repositioning aircraft and leasing additional ones, resulting in an 8.9% increase in cost per piece. FedEx also grounded its MD-11s but expects them to return to service in the near future.
