The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement aims to promote the sustainable use of marine biodiversity in international waters and will take effect on January 17, 2026. Adopted in 2023 after extensive negotiations at the UN, this treaty establishes legally-binding rules for managing marine resources, addressing issues like marine genetic resources, environmental impact assessments, and capacity-building. Over 80 nations have ratified the treaty, which reflects a collective commitment to protect ocean life and ensure equitable sharing of benefits, supported by the International Maritime Organization’s existing regulations.
