Kroger has canceled plans for an automated e-commerce fulfillment center in Charlotte, North Carolina, part of its partnership with Ocado, and will pay $350 million in compensation. Additionally, Kroger plans to close a spoke facility in Nashville, resulting in 132 layoffs. This move reflects Kroger's shift away from its ambitious e-commerce automation project initiated with Ocado in 2018. The company aims to improve its grocery delivery economics by focusing more on store-based order assembly and enhancing partnerships with delivery services, with expectations of profitability in online operations by next year.
