The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) commenced a strike on October 1, 2024, halting operations at all ports from Maine to Texas due to failed contract negotiations with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). Tens of thousands of ILA members set up picket lines, demanding better wages and protections against automation. ILA President Harold Daggett emphasized that the strike would continue until their demands are met. The ongoing dispute has led shippers to reroute cargo and consider alternative shipping methods, as any duration of the strike could severely disrupt supply chains.
