The U.S. Postal Service's attempt to consolidate transportation operations has led to longer delivery times, particularly affecting rural areas, according to a report by the Office of Inspector General. The initiative aims to reduce costs by optimizing mail pickup and drop-off routes but has resulted in a decline in First-Class Mail service performance, with on-time reliability falling below 65% in some rural regions. Additionally, transportation expenses increased by over $7.1 million, countering the program's cost-saving goals, partly due to emergency contracts needed in certain areas.
