CMA CGM and MSC are set to introduce surcharges for cargo transiting the Panama Canal, effective January 2025, due to a new booking reservation system aimed at managing increased operational costs. MSC will impose a $40 per TEU surcharge for routes from Southeast Asia to the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts, while CMA CGM will charge $150 per TEU for various South American routes. These changes come amid ongoing geopolitical shifts and challenges like low water levels affecting canal operations, leading to additional costs for shippers.
