Negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have faced challenges, particularly regarding the use of automation and technology in labor practices. While ILA supports modernization that enhances efficiency without replacing jobs, USMX argues for semi-automation to improve operations. The talks, which resumed in November ahead of a January 15, 2025 deadline, have seen both sides firm in their positions, with ILA prepared to strike if an agreement isn’t reached. USMX insists that modernization can create more jobs and improve productivity, emphasizing the need for a balanced Master Contract that accommodates future growth.
