In 2024, Heathrow Airport managed 1.58 million tonnes of cargo, facilitating trade worth £215.6 billion, making it the UK’s primary trade hub, handling 76% of air cargo exports by value. The airport is unique in its ability to transport all animal species and saw significant cargo operations disrupted by a power outage in March 2025. In response, plans for a third runway were supported by the Chancellor, with a multi-billion-pound investment announced for upgrades. This project aims to enhance economic growth and infrastructure while boosting domestic steel demand.
