In 2024, greenhouse gas emissions from companies in the Rotterdam port decreased by 1.7 Mton (8%) compared to 2023, totaling 19.2 Mton. This reduction is attributed to reduced industrial production and increased sustainable energy generation in the Netherlands, alongside measures like coal plant closures and the implementation of renewable energy initiatives. Five power plants emitted 0.7 Mton (12%) less, primarily due to decreased coal use. Overall, the chemical industry saw a continued decline in emissions, with a notable drop in crude oil processing. The Port of Rotterdam Authority included unregistered emissions for the first time, guided by CE Delft’s recommendations for better emissions mapping.
