Brazil, the top sugar exporter globally, is experiencing a significant outbreak of fires in its sugarcane fields, leading to a 4.2% price increase for consumers and disruptions in the supply chain. Raizen SA reported that approximately 1.8 million tons of sugarcane, about 2% of the expected yield for 2024-25, have been affected. The fires are exacerbated by climate change, including droughts and extreme weather, posing long-term challenges for the sugarcane industry. The market, valued over $2 trillion, is under pressure, with consumers increasingly shifting to alternative sweeteners.
