In week 19 (May 5-11), worldwide chargeable weight fell by one percent, continuing a trend of declines since early April, with only a brief stabilization in week 17. Comparing the last two weeks to the previous ones, there was a three percent drop in global tonnage, although Europe and North America experienced slight growth. The termination of the U.S. de minimis exemption for low-value imports from China on May 2 contributed to diminished airfreight demand and tonnage from China to the U.S. Additionally, the Asia Pacific region saw the largest decline in chargeable weight, while airfreight capacity decreased globally, except for Europe. Future developments may arise from the easing of tariffs on imports from China, potentially increasing airfreight usage despite added customs clearance costs.
