DB Cargo AG, Europe’s largest freight operator, is advancing the digitalization and automation of rail freight, focusing on automating shunting processes in formation yards. Currently, shunting locomotives are mostly manually operated, but plans for fully automated hump locomotives are underway, developed in partnership with Bosch Engineering and ITK Engineering. This technology aims to enhance efficiency and competitiveness in rail transport, contributing to environmental sustainability. The first prototype has been tested, with approval expected by late 2027 for deployment in 2028, supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.
