Cleveland-Cliffs is laying off workers in Michigan and Minnesota due to decreased automotive demand and the impacts of tariffs on steel and auto imports from the Trump administration. The company plans to cut 600 jobs at its Dearborn plant and 630 at two iron ore mines in Minnesota. Cleveland-Cliffs aims to operate more efficiently amid these challenges, anticipating a return to steel production once the tariffs stabilize automotive production. Despite recent layoffs, the company and others in the industry still support the tariffs, believing they protect domestic producers and workers.
