China’s Ministry of Finance announced it will raise tariffs on U.S. imports to 125% in response to the U.S. increasing its tariffs on Chinese goods. This escalation in trade tensions follows a series of reciprocal tariff hikes initiated by the U.S. under President Trump, which has led to significant retaliatory measures from China. The Ministry indicated that further U.S. tariff increases might not elicit additional retaliation from China. The World Trade Organization warns that ongoing trade hostilities could reduce U.S.-China merchandise trade by up to 80% and negatively impact global economic growth.
