Canada’s west coast ports, notably Vancouver and Prince Rupert, are experiencing major disruptions following a lockout of dock foremen by the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA). This action was triggered by a 72-hour strike notice issued by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 514. While grain and cruise operations are unaffected, most cargo activities are disrupted, impacting an estimated $576 million in daily trade. Alberta’s Premier and Transportation Minister have urged the federal government to consider binding arbitration in future labor disputes.
