Bechtel has been chosen by Rio Tinto to design and construct the Copperton Phase 2 Solar project, a renewable energy facility supporting operations at the Kennecott mine in Utah. This marks their first collaboration in renewable energy, emphasizing Rio Tinto’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The project will cover 210 acres, generating 25 MW from efficient bifacial solar modules and is expected to create 100 local jobs. Together with an existing solar plant, it will reduce Scope 2 emissions by approximately 21,000 tons annually, highlighting a commitment to sustainable practices in mining.
