In September, truck tonnage levels declined after two months of increases, as reported by the American Trucking Associations (ATA). The Seasonally Adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell to 113.2, a 1.2% drop from August’s 115.6, with a year-over-year decrease of 0.9%. The not seasonally adjusted index was 111.6, down 6.4% from August. ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello noted that despite the recent decline, tonnage has risen 1.8% since hitting a low in January, indicating a challenging yet upward trend in freight activity.
