In the first quarter of 2025, worldwide air cargo tonnages grew by three percent year on year, with global rates rising four percent, according to WorldACD Market Data. This growth contrasts sharply with the previous year’s average of eleven percent growth, indicating market uncertainty due to impending U.S. tariffs and changes in de minimis exemptions for shipments from China and Hong Kong. In March, tonnages surged by 19 percent month on month, recovering from February’s declines, driven by seasonal factors, while average rates increased to $2.38 per kilo.
