In January 2025, global air cargo demand grew by only 2% year-on-year, significantly lower than the previous year’s double-digit increases, largely due to the earlier Lunar New Year affecting volumes from China. Despite concerns over U.S. tariffs and potential trade wars, Xeneta’s Chief Airfreight Officer, Niall van de Wouw, maintains a growth forecast of 4-6% for the year. E-commerce, especially from China, remains a strong driver of demand, although changes to import regulations could disrupt logistics. Current air cargo rates are elevated, influenced by limited capacity and geopolitical factors, creating uncertainty for shippers.
