For the week ending October 12, U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes showed mixed results, as reported by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Rail carloads totaled 222,003, down 1.3% from the previous year, with seven out of ten commodity groups recording gains, notably grain and metallic ores, while coal and nonmetallic minerals saw declines. Intermodal units increased by 5.9% to 283,030. Year-to-date figures for 2024 indicate a 3.2% drop in rail carloads, totaling 8,919,323, while intermodal units rose by 9.1%, reaching 10,755,542.
