Following the implementation of a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports, U.S. metal-dependent trade groups are urging the Trump administration for exemptions. Industry leaders, including Robert Budway from the Can Manufacturers Institute, warn that these tariffs could lead to inflation and make U.S. food products less competitive due to increased production costs. The domestic can industry, which produces around 135 billion cans annually, faces challenges as U.S. tin mill steel producers have significantly reduced their capacity, risking market share to cheaper imports from abroad.
