Seven businesses and several states have petitioned the Supreme Court to invalidate President Trump’s tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), arguing they are illegal and an unprecedented tax burden on companies. The Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for November 5 after agreeing to expedite the case. The plaintiffs contend that the president lacks constitutional authority to impose tariffs, asserting that IEEPA only allows for asset freezes and sanctions, not taxation. Both parties agree the tariffs are unlawful and detrimental to American businesses and consumers.
